Schwarz Knives is the Idaho workshop of TJ Schwarz, a designer whose name was famous before his brand existed. His CAD-first approach earned Blade Show's Most Innovative American Design award in 2015 for the Koenig Arius and Best Buy of the Year in 2018 for the CRKT Caligo, and his Torrent design anchors the Millit lineup. In 2020 he stopped designing for everyone else's factories and started his own in a one-car garage in New Plymouth, Idaho, where he and his wife Becca now build every knife themselves, guided by a stated philosophy that beauty comes second to function but both belong in a refined product, and that no amount of craftsmanship can cover up poor design.
The Overland is the brand's foundation, named for TJ's overlanding habit and built like his trail rigs: methodical, purposeful, nothing wasted. It's a CPM MagnaCut fixed blade that blends bushcraft, kitchen, and old trade-knife DNA into one modern field tool, flat ground and heat treated to 61-62 HRC by the renowned Peters' Heat Treat. Our stock centers on the Overland Sport, the compact version that helped move Schwarz Knives from garage to dedicated workshop: a pocket-sized fixed blade with a full four-finger handle in black or OD green G-10, stonewashed MagnaCut, and a Kydex sheath designed specifically for easy in-pocket draw. The move from freelance designer to manufacturer was about control: materials, machining tolerances, heat treatment, and finishing all under one roof, with no production partner to blame and no compromise hiding in the supply chain. The wider catalog runs the full-size Overland, the Overland X, and the Confidante as runs allow, every one made in the Idaho shop. A Schwarz knife is what happens when the person who drew it also grinds it, and the difference is something you feel the first time it's in hand.
