The TOPS Brothers of Bushcraft knife, commonly called the B.O.B. or Fieldcraft, stands among the most respected bushcraft fixed blades on the market. Designed by The Brothers of Bushcraft—a coalition of wilderness skills instructors from across North America—this knife represents practical field knowledge forged into 1095 high-carbon and 154CM stainless steel.
What Type of Steel Does the BOB Use?
The original B.O.B. runs 1095 high carbon steel at 56-58 HRC with a differential heat treat, giving you a blade that takes a beating and sharpens easily on a river stone when you need it. For users working in wet environments or preferring lower maintenance, the 154CM stainless variant offers corrosion resistance at 58-60 HRC with a full heat treat. Both steels run a modified Scandinavian grind—flat enough for carving work but sturdy enough to split hardwood without rolling the edge.
Bushcraft-Specific Design Features
Every element of the Fieldcraft serves a purpose beyond cutting. The 3/16-inch thick blade handles batoning through four-inch diameter logs. A 90-degree spine strikes ferro rods cleanly. The exposed pommel features a purpose-built scraper—called the Shango notch—designed specifically for throwing sparks. The canvas Micarta or G-10 handle includes a bow drill divot for primitive fire starting, turning the knife itself into a bearing block. Thumb scallops at the hilt provide control during detail carving and skinning grips.

The B.O.B. earned its reputation through testing by survival instructors, including Mors Kochanski and Dr. Gino Ferri in the Canadian wilderness, where it was deemed a "serviceable field knife"—the highest practical compliment a working tool can receive. Ready for the Trail - Right Out of the Box
Each Fieldcraft ships with a Kydex sheath featuring a steel belt clip and built-in ferro rod holder, plus a combination ferro rod/magnesium rod fire starter and emergency whistle. The sheath mounts comfortably on a belt, pack strap, or around the neck. The 10-inch overall length with 4.5-inch blade keeps the knife compact enough for daily carry but substantial enough for serious wood processing.
