The TOPS Steel Eagle is where the company started. The 107D, a 7 inch tanto with a quarter-inch full-tang 1095 blade, was the first model TOPS ever produced in 1998, hand-ground in small runs and tested in the field by active-duty soldiers before going into general production. More than two decades later it remains the benchmark for overbuilt tactical fixed blades in the TOPS catalog, with a Special Operations community following that has shaped every revision since.
The Steel Eagle's defining feature is its .250 inch thick full-tang blade. The 1095 high carbon steel runs at 56 to 58 HRC, hard enough to hold an edge through extended field use and soft enough to bring back on whatever abrasive surface the user can find. A black traction coating protects the carbon steel from corrosion and cuts down on reflective glare. The sawback spine on selected variants cuts notches in wood and bone for trap-building and shelter work without involving the primary edge.
The Steel Eagle ships in two blade profiles. The hunter's point version, often called the drop point, runs a curved belly suited to skinning, general field cutting, and wood processing. The tanto delivers tip strength and penetration for tactical work against hard materials, vehicle metal, or barriers. TOPS' suffix system identifies the configuration. C means hunter's point with sawback, D means tanto with sawback, E is plain hunter's point, and F is plain tanto.
The Steel Eagle 107 is the original full size at 13 inches overall with a 7 inch blade, the knife that launched TOPS in 1998. The Steel Eagle 105 scales down to 10.5 inches overall with a 5 inch blade while keeping the same quarter-inch spine thickness for easier carry. The 111A extends to an 11 inch blade for maximum reach and chopping capability. Delta Class variants update the original platform with Midnight Bronze Cerakote or Acid Rain Finish, sandwiched micarta scales, and a tan Kydex sheath.
Black or tan linen micarta scales deliver secure grip in wet, muddy, or bloody conditions and accommodate multiple grip positions across cutting tasks. Each Steel Eagle ships with a Kydex or ballistic nylon sheath, with most current production using a rotating spring steel clip for belt or pack mounting.
