Flitz metal polish has been bringing the shine back to dull steel since 1977, when the Jentzsch family started the company in Waterford, Wisconsin, a few hours south of us. The formula is non-toxic, non-acidic, and non-abrasive, so it cleans and protects without eating into the metal. It works on blade steel, brass bolsters, copper, sterling silver, and chrome, and it keeps indefinitely on the shelf as long as it is stored cool and dry.
The signature Flitz Polish cream lifts tarnish, surface rust, water stains, heat discoloration, and fingerprints in one pass, then leaves a protective film behind. That makes it the go-to for the nickel silver and brass on traditional knives, the bolsters on a Case knife that has ridden in a pocket for years, and stainless blades that have picked up spots from the sink. Go light on Damascus knives, since polishing brightens the dark etched layers and softens the contrast of the pattern.
Both formulas clean and protect, so the choice comes down to the job. The paste carries an added ingredient for longer lasting protection and stays where you put it, which suits spot work on a blade, a guard, or a pommel. Liquid Polish spreads faster over larger surfaces and comes in the pocket 1.7 oz bottle or the shop size 3.4 oz bottle. Most collectors keep the paste on the bench for restoration and a bottle of liquid for routine wipe downs.
Surface rust and orange freckling come off with a small dab of polish worked along the grain of the blade with a clean cloth, then buffed dry with a fresh section of the cloth. Deep pitting is a different problem, because Flitz is non-abrasive and heavy corrosion has to be cut back with an abrasive first. On carbon steel knives, remember that polish removes patina along with rust, so work only the spots you want bright. Our guide to every major knife steel compared covers which steels resist corrosion and which ones need regular care.
Polish is the wrong tool for coated, blued, and parkerized finishes, since it will clean cold bluing right off the steel. The Tactical Matte Finish Cleaner removes fingerprints, oil, carbon, and water spots without adding shine or stripping bluing. The Flitz Sealant is a colorless, water resistant knife and gun protectant that is safe on cold bluing and will not gloss a matte finish. For blades and hardware you have already brought to a mirror, the Ceramic Sealant locks in a clear gloss on metal, plastic, and fiberglass. The Super Lube Pen Oiler finishes the job with a fine needle tip that puts PTFE synthetic lube exactly on a pivot or detent without flooding the action.
The Knife Restoration Kit pairs Flitz Liquid Polish and a microfiber cloth with a DMT sharpener and a bottle of Safariland lubricating oil, which covers the shine, the edge, and the action of a flea market find in one box. The Gun & Knife Care Kit brings a stainless steel and chrome cleaner, a tube of polishing paste, Flitz Rifle/Gun & Knife Wax, and a microfiber cloth for blades, axes, and long guns. Add the 16 inch Flitz Polishing Cloth, which washes and reuses up to 500 times, and you have a complete bench setup.
Flitz anchors the polish and rust removal shelf of our full knife and leather care collection. Pair it with Wicked Wax for long term blade protection, Nano-Oil for pivots, or Ballistol for wood and leather handles, and keep the edge as sharp as the polish is bright with our knife sharpening supplies.
