The Benchmade Lowden 491 is a slim, modern flipper that puts the AXIS Lock on a ball bearing pivot. Released in 2025, it carries a 2.79 inch spear point on thin .09 inch stock, runs 6.81 inches open and 4.05 closed, and weighs under three ounces, so it disappears in a pocket until you need it. The spear point puts the tip on the centerline for precise, controlled cutting. Like the rest of the Benchmade AXIS line, it is made in the USA and backed by lifetime LifeSharp service.
Press the flipper tab and the blade snaps open on its bearings. The AXIS Lock's spring-loaded bar then holds it. To close, pull the bar back with either thumb and the blade swings free, so the Lowden works the same for lefties and righties. That combination of a snappy flipper and an ambidextrous lock that is easy to fidget with is the whole appeal.
The original Lowden pairs Böhler M390 with milled aluminum at 2.99 ounces, in Crater Blue with a satin blade or Phoenix Red with a gray Cerakote blade. M390 is a highly polishable powder stainless that holds an edge a long time and shrugs off corrosion, which makes it a great fit for a knife meant to be carried every day.
The 2026 491BK-02 goes dark with a black Cerakote CPM S90V blade, milled black G10 with a machined fuller, and burnt copper hardware, and drops to 2.55 ounces. S90V's high vanadium content gives it one of the longest working edges of any stainless, at the cost of more time on the stones when it finally dulls. Our comparison of every major knife steel covers M390 and S90V side by side, and our folding knives collection has more slim EDC flippers.
