Wyatt Cutchen, a Navy helicopter mechanic working in San Diego, builds knives by hand. Growing up on a Texas homestead instilled a drive for tools that go beyond functional, and his Navy service embedded the kind of attention to detail that makes average unacceptable. Every Bilgewater knife reflects that combination: Texas work ethic meets naval precision. Each blade is ground and sharpened by hand, making no two exactly alike.
What is the Jack Rabbit Fixed Blade?
The Jack Rabbit is Bilgewater's larger fixed blade—a pocket-friendly workhorse at 7 inches overall with a 3.25-inch cutting edge. It's the expanded version of their flagship Rabbit model, sized for a full-handed grip but still carriable in your pocket thanks to the included leather sheath with eyelets for custom clip attachment. Available in premium steels like CruWear, CPM M4 (cryogenically treated to 63.5 HRC), MagnaCut, Nitro-V, 80CrV2, and 52100, with handle options ranging from G10 and Micarta to exotic materials like bog oak, buffalo horn, and maple hybrids.
Why "Bilgewater"?
The name reflects Wyatt's naval background and his philosophy that knives should withstand the harshest environments. As he puts it: "I've traveled the world twice over by sea, witnessing the environments at its best and worst. This has driven me to make my products able to withstand the test of time and nature." These aren't desk drawer knives—they're built for real use in real conditions.
What steels does Bilgewater use?
Tool steels are a specialty: CruWear, CPM M4, 80CrV2, and 52100 are common choices. Note that these will develop a patina and require maintenance—wipe them after use, apply a light oil, and embrace the natural finish. For those seeking stainless steel performance, MagnaCut and Nitro-V options are available. Every steel is selected for proven field performance, not marketing hype.
How are these knives different from factory production?
Handmade means handmade. Every blade is individually ground, every edge hand-sharpened, every scale fitted by Wyatt in his San Diego shop. Unlike mass production, where consistency is the goal, each Bilgewater knife develops its own character through the handmade process. Materials are respected, not just processed. It's the difference between craft and commodity.
