Hogue X5
The Hogue X5 is Allen Elishewitz's button lock flipper, a fully manual knife with no spring that still snaps open at assisted speed. It comes in 3.5 and 4 inch spear point or wharncliffe blades on CNC milled aluminum, in Hogue and SIG Sauer versions, all made in the USA and built for hard use among our folding knives.
Hogue X5 Button Lock Flipper Action
Pressure on the flipper tab loads against an internal detent until it breaks, and the blade fires open on stored energy rather than a torsion spring. A push button lock holds it open and releases it for one handed closing without fingers in the blade path, and a sliding manual safety adds a second lock for hard use. The tip up deep carry clip moves to either side with a filler plate, and replacement clip and Torx kits fit both the X5 and the EX-A05 automatic.
CPM 154 Spear Point and Wharncliffe Blades
Every X5 runs 0.150 inch CPM 154 at 57 to 59 HRC, cryogenically treated with a high flat grind and hand honed edge. CPM 154 is the powder metallurgy version of 154CM, with finer carbides for a cleaner edge and easy sharpening, and our comparison of every major knife steel shows where it lands. The 3.5 inch X5 weighs 4.66 ounces at 8.15 inches open, the 4 inch X5 stretches past 9 inches for more reach, and the wharncliffe trades the spear point's tip for a straight edge built for draw cuts.
Aluminum Frames and SIG Sauer X5 Variants
Frames are hard anodized 6061-T6 aluminum in black, FDE, OD green, or gray, with G-Mascus black G-10 inlays in a mini piranha texture on select Hogue builds, a material our guide to knife handle materials explains. The SIG X5 Tactical pairs gray aluminum and black G-10 with black blades, the SIG X5 runs black aluminum with an FDE blade, and the X5 Emperor Scorpion matches SIG's Emperor Scorpion pistols with an FDE wharncliffe.
