J.E. Made is the boutique workshop of Chen JiYi, a maker producing small-batch modern traditional knives in China since 2010. Chen drew his first designs in 2008 and had his early blades heat treated by American maker Jerry Hossom before mastering the process himself; today a hammer symbol on the blade marks every knife Chen heat treated personally, with vacuum ovens, an 80 below zero cryo cycle, and double tempering behind it.
Are J.E. Made Knives Good?
Yes, to a degree that has forced skeptics of Chinese production to make an exception. S35VN and M390 blades run 60 to 61 HRC from that in-house heat treat, every slipjoint carries a strong backspring with a half-stop for safe closing, and each knife ships with spare hardware and its own tool so the owner never depends on an overseas warranty trip. Modern Traditional Slipjoints and Loveless Pattern Fixed Blades
The folder side updates classic patterns with modern materials: the Swayback, Lambfoot, New York Special, Phoenix, Combustion, FireFly, and Shark III wear titanium frames with carbon fiber inlays, all covered in our knife handle materials guide, and slot naturally beside the classics in our traditional knives department. The fixed blade side runs the Loveless Hunter, Semi Skinner, and Bushcraft in micarta with Kydex sheaths. Batches are small and irregular, so stock moves quickly when it lands.
