The partnership with custom knife maker Ken Onion transformed the industry. His SpeedSafe assisted-opening mechanism, introduced in 1998, revolutionized how folding knives deploy. A torsion bar holds the blade closed until you manually initiate opening via thumb stud or flipper; then spring-assist completes deployment rapidly. This mechanism appears across Kershaw's most popular models: the slim Leek, the tactical Blur, and the modern Iridium.
For users who want push-button deployment, the Launch series delivers USA-made performance with CPM 154 blades, anodized aluminum handles, and aggressive action. Models range from the compact Launch 4 (legal in most jurisdictions) to full-size folders like the Launch 1 and Launch 21.
Kershaw's steel selection matches each knife's purpose and price point. Entry-level models use 8Cr13MoV or 420HC. Mid-range knives feature Sandvik 14C28N—developed at Kershaw's request—or D2. Premium models run CPM 154, S35VN, or the latest CPM MagnaCut super steel found in the Bel Air and recent Leek variants.
