KPL began in 2018 when Ryan, a knife collector and engineer with professional experience in lubricant technology, saved up for his first truly high-end folder, tried every oil on the market to protect it, and found nothing built for the job. A year of formulation and testing later, Knife Pivot Lube launched from the family's Texas garage as the first lubricant engineered specifically for folding knife mechanisms, synthesized from ultra-pure ethylene gas and blended with contaminant encapsulation technology that holds dirt, metal particles, and grit in suspension so they clean out of the pivot instead of grinding inside it.
Three weights cover every mechanism. KPL Original at 15WT is the do-everything formula for ball bearings, bronze and Teflon washers, IKBS, and MRBS systems across our folding knives department, non-evaporating from minus 40 to 400 degrees and lockface safe. Ultra-Light at 5WT minimizes fluid drag for OTF knives, button locks, and bearing flippers where deployment speed is the point. Heavy at 75WT is a thixotropic gel that stays parked on detent balls and lock interfaces through pocket carry, then refluidizes under the shear of each lock cycle, ideal for detent tracks, balisongs, and hard-use folders in wet conditions. Every bottle ships with a needle applicator that puts one precise drop exactly where the mechanism needs it.
Dry Film, added in 2023, applies as a liquid and flashes off in seconds to leave a fluorinated layer under a millionth of a meter thick, completely dry with the lowest surface energy in its class, so dust, lint, and field debris have nothing to stick to, which makes it the pick for hunting and bushcraft folders. The Camellia Kitchen Oil goes the opposite direction, pure virgin tsubaki seed oil in the Japanese sword-care tradition, food safe and edible for protecting the carbon steel in our kitchen knives department. Ultra-micro swabs, the full Maintenance Kit, and the Triple Combo round out a care system that belongs next to everything in our knife sharpening supplies department.
