Maglite has been the standard for American-made flashlights since 1979, and the company behind it is one machinist's story. Tony Maglica arrived from Croatia in 1950 speaking no English, saved $125 for the down payment on his first lathe, and ran a one-man Los Angeles garage machine shop until a contract making protective aluminum tubes for police flashlights showed him how to build something better. The anodized aluminum Maglite he introduced in 1979 became standard issue for a generation of American law enforcement, and today more than 800 workers build every light in Ontario, California, where Maglica, in his nineties, is still first in and last out every day.
The lineup has covered every pocket and glovebox for four decades. The Solitaire, introduced in 1988, fits on a keychain and runs a single AAA. The Mini Maglite set the standard for personal-size lights when the AA version launched in 1984, with the AAA following in 1987, and we stock both in the classic anodized colors with presentation boxes. The full-size D-Cell lights deliver the throw and runtime for power outages, vehicle kits, and situations where you want a light with real weight in the hand, now running modern LED modules that multiply the output and runtime of the originals while keeping the machined bodies, self-cleaning contacts, and adjustable spot-to-flood focus beam that made the design famous.
