The Microtech Amphibian is the hard-use face of the RAM-LOK manual family: a full-size folder swinging a 3.9-inch Bohler M390MK recurve drop point out of a 9.25-inch frame that weighs around 6 ounces. Where the automatics deploy with a bang, the Amphibian rides a ball bearing pivot behind dual thumb studs, and the action is smooth enough that people forget to miss the spring.
The name goes back to an earlier Microtech automatic, and the RAM-LOK revival brought that recurve profile to the manual side of the Microtech lineup. Machined in the USA, it has quietly become one of the deepest categories in the brand's manual catalog.
The RAM-LOK crossbar drops from either side of the handle, making the knife fully ambidextrous alongside its reversible milled titanium tip-up clip, and a lanyard hole finishes the practical checklist. The handle program is where this model stretches out: fluted aluminum in black, tan, blue, red, orange, and natural clear, fluted and frag G-10 in black, tan, and OD green, fluted carbon fiber Signature Series builds, and Marfione Select titanium with anodized backspacers in bronze, blue, purple, and flamed finishes, up through antique blue frag titanium. Few Microtech manuals offer this much material variety in one grid.
The Mini shrinks the same lock, steel, and recurve profile to a 3.25-inch M390MK blade at 7.72 inches overall and roughly 3.5 to 3.7 ounces, and it exists because plenty of carriers admired the full-size knife and found it more blade than their week required. Pick the full size for gloved, hard-use days and maximum edge; pick the Mini when the knife needs to disappear into slacks and still be unmistakably a Microtech.
The in-house rivalry on the manual side comes down to character. The MSI runs a sheepsfoot blade and a thumb-hole opener, with a lineup that starts in polymer and G-10; the Amphibian answers with a recurve drop point, thumb studs on bearings, and a bigger frame. Same lock, same steel, two philosophies, and together with the Stitch RAM-LOK they give Microtech's manual folding knives ground the brand didn't cover a few years ago. Our comparison of every major knife steel shows why M390MK is the right engine for both.
