Obenauf's Leather Care began with Marv Obenauf, an Idaho wildland firefighter who watched expensive boots that once lasted years start dying in one, and went looking for the reason. The answer was twofold: caustic fire retardants and ash attack leather, and the petroleum oils and paraffin in modern treatments quietly make it worse. After testing 43 different plant oils, Marv blended natural oils into a suspension of beeswax and propolis, the antibacterial tree resin, mixed his first batches in a 55-gallon drum in his garage, and sold them from his motor home until the formula's reputation did the selling for him. Decades later, Obenauf's is still made in Idaho and still contains no petroleum, silicone, solvents, or mink oil.
Heavy Duty LP is the flagship, a paste that melts in by hand and releases its oils gradually over time, faster wherever heat and flexing demand it, so leather stays fed instead of parched. It waterproofs while letting leather breathe, resists scuffing, salt, acids, and mildew, and goes odorless once applied, which matters when the leather in question is riding a hunting knife into game country. The companion Leather Oil handles bigger jobs and thirstier hides in a 16 ounce bottle. A leather knife sheath is a working object that lives through the same rain, sweat, and abuse the knife does, and a twice-a-year rub of LP is the difference between a sheath that ages and one that fails.
