Hinderer Firetac
The Hinderer FireTac is one of Rick Hinderer's earliest frame lock designs, a custom he built around the turn of the century and brought back as custom pieces at Blade Show 2017 before putting it into regular production. Slimmer and lighter than the XM series, it is the everyday tactical folder of the Rick Hinderer knives lineup, made in the USA.
Hinderer FireTac vs XM-18
The FireTac runs a 3.6 inch blade at 8.3 inches open and 4.7 inches closed, close to the XM-18 3.5 in size, but it weighs about 4.1 ounces and carries thinner 0.140 inch blade stock. It also skips the flipper and the handle jimping, so it slides in and out of the pocket more smoothly and moves between grips without hot spots. If the XM-18 feels like too much knife, the FireTac is the slim alternative.
Thumb Disc Opening and CPM 20CV Tanto
Instead of a flipper, the FireTac opens off a low profile titanium thumb disc on top of the blade, ambidextrous and quick enough to flick open with the middle finger. The current run features a 20CV tanto with a strong, reinforced tip. FireTac Upgrades From the XM Series
The production FireTac keeps the original's blade thickness but picks up what Hinderer learned on the XM-18: larger handle screws, redesigned standoffs, a hardened steel lockbar insert, the Lockbar Stabilizer, and the Tri-Way Pivot on bearings with swappable bronze and Teflon washers. The titanium frame lock pairs with either a G-10 scale or a full titanium scale, and the clip carries right hand, tip up or tip down.
