Spartan Blades Talos
The Spartan Blades Talos is a featherweight everyday carry folder designed by William W. Harsey Jr., the maker behind the Yarborough knife. It is part of the Spartan Blades Field Grade line, produced in Taiwan through Pineland Cutlery, which makes it an accessible way to carry a Harsey design every day. In Greek myth, Talos was the giant bronze guardian who circled Crete three times a day.
Spartan Blades Talos Specs
The Talos carries a 3.12 inch flat ground blade on 0.12 inch stock with a tumbled finish. It runs 7 inches open and weighs about 2.3 ounces. Dual thumb studs open it, a liner lock holds it, and a deep carry clip set for right hand tip up carry keeps it low in the pocket. At that weight it is the kind of folding knife you forget is there until you need it.
CTS-XHP Blade Steel
The blade is Carpenter CTS-XHP, a powder stainless that takes a fine edge, holds it longer than most mid-range steels, and resists corrosion well enough for daily pocket carry. Our knife steel guide shows how it compares with the MagnaCut in Spartan's US-made knives.
OIBBS Pivot and G-10 Handle
Like every Field Grade folder, the Talos pivots on Spartan's Oil Infused Bronze Bushing System. The bronze bushings are impregnated with oil, so the blade swings quick and smooth without a loose pivot. Harsey's ergonomic G-10 scales come in black or OD green, slim enough to carry flat and textured enough to hold onto.
Talos vs Astor and Harsey Folder
Les George's Astor is the full-size sibling, a 3.5 inch CTS-XHP liner lock with the same OIBBS pivot. To step up to Harsey's US-made titanium framelock, the Spartan Harsey Folder won American-Made Knife of the Year at Blade Show 2016. Its 3.25 inch version is the closest match in size to the Talos.
