The TOPS River Rat is a compact fixed blade designed by Julio Diez for situations where gear space is limited and moisture is constant, like floating a river on an inner tube. It pairs a short, maneuverable blade with a full-sized handle so you don't sacrifice grip or control just because the knife is small. Originally a small-batch custom build, it's now produced with TOPS for wider availability.

Blade

The 2.75" sheepsfoot blade is made from 154CM steel with a Black Rough Terrain finish. 154CM is a stainless steel that holds a good edge and resists corrosion well, making it a solid choice for a knife meant to spend time wet. The sheepsfoot style has a flat edge and a spine that curves down to meet it, giving good control for detail work without a piercing tip.

Handle

The handle is G-10, a fiberglass laminate that stays grippy when wet and won't degrade with repeated water exposure. TOPS sized the handle to full length despite the short blade, so it fills the hand and reduces fatigue during extended use. At 3.9oz, the River Rat carries light without feeling undersized in hand.

Carry

The River Rat ships with a black Kydex sheath built to keep the blade secure even when worn on a wet belt. Kydex resists water absorption and holds its shape better than leather in constant-moisture environments. No lock mechanism to worry about here - it's a fixed blade, so the sheath does the retention work.
