The TOPS Tom Brown Tracker remains one of the most recognizable survival knife designs ever produced. Designed by tracker and naturalist Tom Brown Jr. and featured in the 2003 film The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro, the Tracker brought a radical concept to production knives: multiple tool functions built into a single 1095 carbon steel blade. The design has appeared on the cover of BLADE Magazine and held its position in the TOPS catalog for more than two decades.
The Tracker's distinctive profile integrates several cutting geometries into one piece of steel. The curved belly handles skinning. The straight section near the handle gives control for detail carving. The hooked upper portion delivers chopping power normally reserved for hatchets. The sawback spine cuts notches and processes green wood for traps, shelter, and fire prep. All of this runs on 1095 high carbon steel at 56 to 58 HRC with a traction coating, a steel chosen because it sharpens quickly on improvised surfaces when the user is days from a stone.
The Tom Brown Tracker #1 is the original at 11.88 inches overall with a 6.38 inch blade and .250 inch spine, a 21 ounce knife built for heavy chopping and batoning. The Tracker #2 and the related T-2 scale the same geometry down to 9.5 inches with roughly a 5 inch blade and 3/16 inch stock. The Tracker #3 sits between the two with a tumble finish on the 1095 blade. The Mini Tom Brown Tracker shrinks the multi-function profile to 6.5 inches overall for EDC carry while keeping the sawback intact. A Rocky Mountain Tread handle variant adds aggressive textured grip for wet conditions.
The Tom Brown Scout is the small companion piece to the Tracker line, designed by Tom Brown Jr. for smaller cutting tasks where the Tracker is too much knife. It runs a 3.25 inch drop point 1095 blade at 7.25 inches overall, viable as an EDC fixed blade on its own and a natural pair to the full-size Tracker on extended trips.
Black or green canvas micarta handles deliver a secure grip in wet conditions, and each Tracker ships with a fitted Kydex sheath and a rotating spring steel clip for belt, pack, or scout carry.
