The WE Gunwale is a limited edition titanium flipper from WE Knife Company, named for the upper edge of a ship's side and built as part of the Navy chapter of its Armed Forces inspired collection. It pairs a 3.87 inch Bohler M390 tanto with a stout titanium frame lock, and each colorway is a small serialized run that ships with a signed certificate of authenticity.
The Gunwale's blade blends a tanto front with a clipped spine, and the silhouette reads like the bow of a warship cutting ahead. WE gives it a compound grind, hollow grinding the primary bevel for slicing and flat grinding the tip for strength. It is cut from 0.16 inch Bohler M390, one of the best stainless steels for edge retention and corrosion resistance, and our knife steel comparison shows where it ranks. It is a strong pick for anyone who carries tanto blades for hard daily work.
The handle is 6AL4V titanium with copper inlays, milled into a solid, hand filling shape that matches the heavy blade. A flipper tab drives the blade on caged ceramic ball bearings, and the titanium frame lock snaps in behind it. Jimping is placed where the thumb lands without chewing up the hand. The Gunwale measures 8.8 inches open and 4.93 inches closed, weighs 5.47 ounces, and carries tip up on a titanium clip for right hand pocket carry.
WE built this collection around four branches of the military, with two knife designs for each, and every colorway draws on its branch. The Gunwale carries the Navy theme, sitting alongside designs like the Air Force inspired WE Flight Line. Every knife in the series is a limited, numbered run, which makes the Gunwale as much a collector piece as it is a working folder.
All three versions share the same blade, lock, and dimensions. The 24048-1 is the working finish, gray titanium over a gray stonewashed blade. The 24048-2 goes polished across the board, with polished gray titanium and a matching polished gray blade. The 24048-3 wears blue terrain titanium with a hand polished satin blade and gray stonewashed flats, the most nautical of the three.
