Adler Axes has been forging quality cutting tools in Germany for over a century. Founded by Josef Schmitt in 1919 as a small village blacksmith shop in Wiesental, the company now operates from Waghäusel in southern Germany, just south of Heidelberg near the Rhine River. Four generations later, Tobias Schmitt runs the family business with the same commitment to quality and craftsmanship that built Adler's reputation.
Every Adler axe bears the JSW maker's mark—Josef Schmitt's initials combined with "W" for Wiesental, honoring both the founder and the small village where it all began.
Adler forges each axe head from C60 steel sourced in Germany. This high-carbon steel delivers excellent edge retention and durability for years of hard use in the field or forest. The heads are carefully sharpened and securely mounted using round metal wedges that distribute pressure evenly for a solid, lasting connection.
Handles are crafted from American hickory, selected for its shock absorption and stability. The water-based paint finish has an abrasive quality that ensures secure grip even in wet conditions. Replacement handles are available separately when needed.
Adler operates a certified FWI facility, confirming authentic "Made in Germany" production. The company opened a water-based paint facility in 2004 and an automatic drying kiln in 2006. Wood waste from handle manufacturing generates up to 700 kilowatts of energy that powers the factory—part of Adler's commitment to modernizing operations while maintaining traditional quality standards.
From compact hatchets for backpacking to full-size felling axes for foresters, Adler offers tools for splitting wood, processing firewood, clearing trails, and serious timber work. Models like the Rheinland Hatchet, Canoe Axe, and Yankee Axe are designed for specific tasks while maintaining the balanced feel and ergonomic design that defines German-made hand tools.
Each axe and hatchet ships with a leather sheath that protects both the edge and the user.
