on Orders Over $99The Benchmade 940 Osborne is the most influential EDC folder of the modern era. Designed by Warren Osborne and introduced in 2000, it pioneered the reverse tanto blade shape and set the template for the slim, premium everyday carry knife. A quarter century later, it remains the benchmark the rest of the category gets measured against.
The 940 runs a 3.40-inch CPM-S30V reverse tanto with a satin finish, hardened to 58-60 HRC and ground from .115-inch stock. S30V earns its keep as an EDC steel by balancing edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness without demanding specialty sharpening equipment. The reverse tanto geometry is the design's signature: a reinforced tip strong enough for piercing work, backed by enough belly for clean slicing cuts.
Benchmade's AXIS lock secures the blade with a spring-tensioned crossbar that engages the full blade tang. It is completely ambidextrous, pairs with dual thumb studs for opening from either hand, and keeps your fingers clear of the edge path when closing. Lockup is solid enough for hard use while staying smooth enough for one-handed fidget-friendly action.
Green anodized 6061-T6 aluminum scales ride over 410 stainless steel liners, finished with the 940's famous purple anodized titanium backspacer. At just .41 inches thick and 4.47 inches closed, the handle carries a full 7.87-inch open length in a profile that disappears in a pocket.
At 2.90 ounces with a reversible tip-up clip, the 940 works equally well in an office, on a job site, or as a hunting camp backup. It is the rare folder refined enough for gentleman's carry and tough enough for daily work. Made in the USA and backed by Benchmade's lifetime warranty and LifeSharp service.
The 940 is the original of the line. Compare every variant, blade steel, and size in the full Benchmade Osborne family.
