Benchmade Griptilian
The Benchmade Griptilian has been one of the most carried everyday folders in America since it debuted in 2001. Mel Pardue designed it, and its name comes from its handle: textured, glass filled Noryl GTX that locks into your grip wet, cold, or gloved. Pair that with the AXIS Lock and a reversible tip up clip, and you have a work folder that has stayed a benchmark for more than two decades. Every current Griptilian runs CPM S30V, is made in the USA, and is backed by Benchmade lifetime LifeSharp service.
Benchmade Griptilian 551 and 550
The full size Griptilian runs a 3.45 inch blade on .115 inch stock, 8.07 inches open and 4.62 closed. The 551 is the drop point, a strong tip and useful belly for everything from boxes to food, at 3.88 ounces. The 550 is the sheepsfoot, with a straight edge and rounded, blunted tip for utility cutting where you never want to pierce, at 3.79 ounces.
Benchmade Mini Griptilian 556 and 555
The Mini Griptilian trims to a 2.91 inch blade, 6.78 inches open and 3.87 closed, for a more discreet carry with the same grip and lock. The 556 is the drop point at 2.81 ounces, the 555 is the sheepsfoot at 2.68, and the 556SBK adds a coated blade with a partially serrated edge for cord and strap work.
Griptilian vs Bugout
Both are Benchmade AXIS folders with blades around three and a half inches, but they are built for different carriers. The Griptilian is the work knife, with a thicker, grippier handle and a heavier build that fills the hand for hard cutting.
