Benchmade Bugout 535 Blade and Steel Options
The Bugout 535 is available across four blade steels depending on the configuration. CPM-S30V is the standard production steel — a high-carbon stainless that balances edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening across everyday tasks. CPM-S90V steps up wear resistance significantly for users who push edge retention harder and are comfortable with a more demanding sharpening process. M390 appears in select aluminum-handle configurations, offering a premium stainless with high carbide content and strong corrosion resistance. Elmax rounds out the lineup in specific sprint and special configurations, delivering a well-rounded high-performance stainless with predictable sharpening behavior.
All configurations run the same 3.24-inch drop-point blade profile — a versatile geometry that handles general utility cutting, food prep, and detail work without a weak tip.
Handle Configurations and Colorways
The 535 ships across three primary handle materials. Standard Grivory scales — a glass-filled nylon composite — keep the knife at its signature 1.85oz weight while providing a textured, rigid grip. Aluminum handles add weight and a more premium feel, available in colorways including burnt brass, storm gray, and crater blue. Richlite and carbon fiber appear in select builds for users who want upgraded aesthetics with a lightweight profile.
Grivory colorways include black, tan, dark olive, ranger green, and crater blue. Blade finishes run from satin to stonewash, DLC black, Cerakote desert verde, and FDE depending on the configuration.
AXIS Lock
Every Bugout 535 runs Benchmade's patented AXIS Lock — a spring-loaded ambidextrous bar that locks the blade open and closed. It operates equally well from either side without repositioning the grip, making one-handed deployment and closing fast and reliable. The mechanism has a well-documented track record across decades of hard use in production folders and is one of the primary reasons the Bugout platform has held its reputation.
Benchmade Mini Bugout 533
Users who want the Bugout platform in a smaller package should look at the Mini Bugout 533. The 533 trims the blade to 2.82 inches and overall weight to 1.5 ounces while keeping the AXIS Lock, drop-point geometry, and the same handle material options available on the full-size platform. It's one of the lightest capable folders in production at its size class.
