The Benchmade Mini Bugout 533 is a 1.5-ounce AXIS Lock folder that scales the full-size 535 Bugout platform down to a 2.82-inch blade and a 3.7-inch closed length without cutting corners on steel, lock mechanism, or blade geometry. The sub-3-inch blade puts it under most municipal carry thresholds, and the closed footprint fits inside a standard mint tin — a detail that matters if you build compact survival kits or just want a capable knife that disappears in your pocket.
The standard 533 runs a CPM-S30V drop point blade with a satin or black DLC finish. S30V is a proven stainless powder steel that balances edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening across general EDC tasks — packages, cardboard, cordage, food prep. The 533-3 upgrades to CPM-S90V, a high-vanadium super steel with significantly longer edge life for users who prioritize time between sharpenings and are comfortable with a harder-to-sharpen alloy. Blade thickness is 0.090 inches across all configurations.
Handle material varies by model. Standard 533 variants run Grivory — a lightweight, textured polymer available in orange, black, white, Daybreak Yellow, and limited colorways. The 533BK-2 steps up to CF-Elite, a carbon-fiber-filled polymer that adds rigidity and grip texture over standard Grivory at the same weight. The 533-3 runs milled carbon fiber scales with blue anodized aluminum accents — the premium build in the lineup.
The AXIS Lock operates ambidextrously using a spring-loaded bar that engages the blade tang for lockup. It allows one-handed opening and closing from either side without repositioning your grip and keeps fingers clear of the blade path on closing. Dual thumb studs are anodized aluminum. The DLC-coated titanium AXIS bar is a Benchmade detail that reduces friction and extends lock life.
