Black Roc Knives is the shop name of Ken Vehikite, a self taught maker working out of Elwood, Indiana. He picked up knifemaking in 2013 after a run painting motorcycles and a stint working in a maximum security prison, and turned it into a full time trade. There is no CNC in the shop. Vehikite grinds, shapes, and finishes every knife himself, one at a time, which is why his drops sell out in minutes and why no two pieces come off the belt looking quite identical.
You can identify a Black Roc across a table. The blades wear a hammered finish that kills glare and breaks up the surface, and the scales are thick G-10 with three dimensional carving around the perimeter and stippling through the middle, cut so dirt and moisture channel away from the palm instead of pooling under it. Grip stays honest when your hands are wet, bloody, or gloved. Every knife here ships in a Kydex sheath, and the smaller models add a right hand tip down pocket clip.
Vehikite works in low alloy carbon steel, which is the correct choice for knives built around impact. Most of this lineup runs 80CrV2, a simple tough steel that takes abuse, sharpens easily, and will patina if you let it. The RUHK models run Pop's ProCut, a genuinely new steel developed by Larrin Thomas with Pop's Knife Supply and released in 2025. ProCut was designed as an evolution of 80CrV2, adding nickel, tungsten, and vanadium to hold an edge substantially longer while keeping the toughness and the forgiving heat treat that make simple carbon steels worth using. The Vandal is the compact one, a 3.5 inch reverse tanto on 0.184 inch stock with a strong angular tip built for penetration, offered with or without a finger ring. The Joker runs a 4.5 inch drop point for anyone who wants a more conventional working profile in the same aggressive package. The Alien takes the hawkbill route at 4.5 inches, a hooking blade that pulls material into the edge. The RUHK steps up to a 4.85 inch drop point in ProCut at nearly three quarters of a pound. Then there is the GutsFighter, a 9.125 inch bowie on 0.245 inch stock weighing a pound and a half, built for chopping and batoning, with a Small GutsFighter version that scales the same shape down and mounts on a Tek-Lok. The Fury covers bowie duty in green G-10. Vehikite also turns out hammered 80CrV2 paperweights when the mood strikes.
In 2021 Italian manufacturer Fox Knives brought Vehikite's designs into series production. The Monkey Thumper, a karambit influenced fixed blade with a ring pommel and a stout harpoon profile, and the Ryu, a stripped down oversized take on the Japanese tanto, led the collaboration in Niolox tool steel with topographical handle scales.
