High Grain Designs has built its name on one knife, and it keeps refining it. The DeVille is a titanium hardware linerlock folder made for everyday carry, and the DeVille R2 is its second production run. High Grain changed very little from the original: the choil got slightly larger for better control, the scale screws sit deeper for a smoother feel in the hand, jimping went onto the spine for a surer forward grip, and the blade moved to Elmax. It is a short list of changes, and that is the point. A design that only needs small corrections the second time around was right the first time.
The DeVille R2 runs a 3.25 inch Elmax blade on 0.125 inch stock, with 3 inches of cutting edge and a two tone satin finish. Elmax is a powder metallurgy stainless from Uddeholm that balances edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance better than most steels at its level, which makes it an easy steel to live with in a pocket. It takes a fine edge, resists rust from sweat and weather, and does not chip under ordinary work. Our comparison of every major knife steel shows where Elmax lands against S35VN and MagnaCut.
Every DeVille R2 pairs titanium hardware, in bead blasted or black PVD, with a choice of scales. The Green Canvas Micarta DeVille brings a warm, grippy feel that improves with use, the Gulf CamoCarbon DeVille adds a bold patterned composite, and the T'Challa purple carbon fiber DeVille sets black PVD titanium against woven purple carbon. The handle measures 0.50 inch thick and the knife weighs about 4.5 ounces, solid without being bulky. Our guide to knife handle materials covers how Micarta, CamoCarbon, and carbon fiber differ in hand.
The DeVille R2 locks up with a linerlock and carries on a right hand, tip up pocket clip. It measures 7.875 inches open and 4.625 inches closed, a size that rides easily in a front pocket and still fills the hand for real cutting.
