Rick Hinderer added the XM-18 3.25 to a lineup that had run on three sizes for years, the 3 inch, the 3.5 inch, and the 4 inch XM-24. It sits deliberately between the compact 3 inch and the full working 3.5 inch, giving everyday carry users a size that reads a little less overt in an office or dress setting without giving up the platform's hard-use reputation.
A quarter inch sounds minor on paper, but on a knife carried every day it changes how the folder rides in the pocket and how readily it comes out for routine tasks. The 3.25 keeps the proportions of the larger XM-18 3.5 inch while trimming just enough presence to suit carriers who find that size a touch much and the XM-18 3 inch a touch short.
Blades run in two premium stainless steels, CPM MagnaCut and CPM S45VN, at .165 inch thick, most often in a spear point profile alongside spanto and other Hinderer grinds. MagnaCut brings the edge retention and corrosion resistance that has made it the current benchmark for high performance folders, while S45VN remains a proven, tough choice. The build carries the hardware the XM platform is known for, a titanium framelock with the Hinderer Lockbar Stabilizer, the Tri-Way pivot system for tuning blade action between bronze, Teflon, and bearings, textured G-10 scales, and a reversible pocket clip. Every knife is machined in the USA.
