Hogue automatic knives are built start to finish under one roof at the family owned Hogue plant in Henderson, Nevada. The company moved its headquarters there in part because California law barred it from manufacturing automatics, and the lineup now splits two ways: push button side openers and double action models that fire straight out the front, with licensed versions built for Heckler & Koch and SIG Sauer.
Hogue sells its automatics only through authorized dealers. For every brand and mechanism side by side, browse our full range of automatic knives, or step back to the complete Hogue knives catalog.
The Ballista leads the side openers. Allen Elishewitz drew the full size Ballista I around a 3.5 inch 154CM blade with a manual safety beside the button, and the partially serrated black Cerakote tanto is the version issued to U.S. military units under its own NSN. The compact Ballista II drops to a 2.6 inch MagnaCut bayonet blade at about 2 ounces. The A01 Microswitch goes smaller still, while the EX-A01 stretches to a 4 inch drop point. SIG adds the K365A and K320A M17. The wider field sits under side opening automatic knives.
Every front firing Hogue is double action, so one ambidextrous thumb slide both deploys and retracts the blade. The Counterstrike is the flagship at 3.35 inches with a carbide glass breaker in the butt, and the Micro Counterstrike shrinks that platform for lighter carry. The Compound and the aluminum framed Exploit round out the Hogue badged models, while the HK Incursion and HK Hadron run under the Heckler & Koch license. Profiles and cover options for all of them live on our Hogue OTF knives page, with OTF knives from every maker a click away.
CPM MagnaCut carries most current production, including the Ballista II, K365A, Micro Counterstrike, and the double edge Counterstrike under carbon fiber. Standard Counterstrike builds run CPM 20CV at 59 to 61 HRC for long edge holding, the Ballista I stays on 154CM, and the K320A M17 uses S30V. Blades are cryogenically treated, and frames are hard anodized 6061-T6 aluminum with covers in G-10, G-Mascus, Ultem, polymer, carbon fiber, and cocobolo. Our comparison of every major knife steel shows how those alloys trade toughness against wear resistance, and our tactical knives put Hogue beside its peers.
