Opinel has built the same French folding knife since 1890 — and collectors, chefs, and outdoor enthusiasts keep buying them for good reason. The design works. A thin, razor-sharp blade mounted in a lightweight beechwood handle delivers pure slicing performance without the bulk of modern tactical folders. The Victoria and Albert Museum recognized Opinel among the 100 best-designed objects in the world, and over 130 years of production from their Chambéry, France facility proves the design holds up.
Every Opinel folding knife uses one of two proven blade steels. XC90 carbon steel offers superior edge retention and easy field sharpening — ideal for bushcraft and camp use, where you can maintain the blade. Carbon develops a natural patina over time and requires occasional oiling to prevent rust. Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel provides corrosion resistance for wet environments, food prep, and low-maintenance carry. Both steels take a razor edge and hold it through extended cutting tasks.
Models No. 6 and larger feature the Virobloc rotating collar, a locking mechanism that secures the blade open during use and closed for pocket carry. Smaller sizes (No. 2 through No. 5) use friction-based opening without the lock. The No. 8 remains the most popular size with its 3.28" blade balancing everyday carry legality with enough cutting edge for serious work.
Beyond traditional folders, Opinel produces Effilé slim knives with flexible blades for filleting, folding saws for camp wood processing, and complete outdoor cooking kits. Handle options include standard beechwood, olive wood, walnut, and laminated birch for those wanting premium materials on a proven platform.
