Rocco Handmade produces Scagel-inspired fixed blade hunting knives handcrafted by Brian Nawrocki in eastern Michigan. The lineage matters: William Scagel was the reclusive Michigan master whose work inspired Bo Randall to found Randall Made Knives, and Nawrocki works inside that tradition directly, having apprenticed under Jim Behring at Treeman Knives and Leather Shop, where he continues to work while building Rocco Handmade since 2018.
Nawrocki forges his blades from 1095 carbon steel with the intentional geometry field dressing demands, across patterns like the Nessmuk skinner, hammer-marked Nessmuk, Michigan Hunter with its aluminum crows beak pommel, Bird and Trout, Deer and Trout, and hunters named for Michigan's Fox River and Bear Creek. These are working hunting knives in the truest old sense, each a one-off fixed blade that will dress game the way its ancestors did a century ago.
Handle work is where the Scagel inspiration shows brightest: India sambar stag and stabilized wood alongside genuine stacked horse hide, the master's own signature material, all built over brass guards with fiber and aluminum spacers stacked in period-correct color runs from vintage ivory to maroon.
