Silky Saws manufactures hand saws in Ono, Japan using SK-4 carbon steel blades cut by laser for precise tooth profiles. The steel combines high carbon content for wear resistance with a soft core that keeps the blade flexible during cutting. Founded in 1919 by Katsuji Miyawaki under the original TAMAKITSUNE brand, Silky developed proprietary manufacturing processes, including a patented saw setting technique introduced in 1980 that improved cutting sharpness. The blade construction features taper-ground geometry to reduce friction in the kerf, while chrome plating protects against rust and resin from green wood cutting.
GomBoy and PocketBoy Folding Saw Models
The GomBoy folding saw, introduced in 1985, features the first rubber-clad handle in the industry. It won the Japanese Good-Design prize and set the standard for portable saws. Available in 210mm, 240mm, 270mm, and 300mm blade lengths, GomBoy models offer medium teeth at 10 teeth per 30mm (8.5 TPI) for general cutting and large teeth at 7.5 teeth per 30mm for aggressive removal in green wood. The PocketBoy compact series provides 130mm and 170mm blades in fine, medium, and large tooth configurations. The 170mm fine teeth version features 20 teeth per 30mm (17 TPI) and 1.0mm blade thickness for precision work. Both designs include two locking positions for inline or flush cutting and fold into hard plastic carry cases.
Zubat and Big Boy Professional Fixed Blade Saws
Silky's Zubat fixed blade saws have curved profiles in 330mm and 390mm lengths for arborist work and pruning that requires reaching into dense canopy. The curved geometry creates aggressive cutting angles that improve efficiency in overhead positions compared to straight blades. Big Boy models range from 360mm standard versions to specialized Outback Edition designs with arbor composite handles for better grip in wet, cold, or game processing conditions. The Outback series uses black nickel-tin blade coatings instead of standard chrome plating, offering more corrosion resistance and less glare during field use.
Katanaboy Large Format Two-Handed Saws
The Katanaboy represents Silky's largest folding saw category, available in 500mm, 550mm, and 700mm blade lengths requiring two-handed operation. These oversized folders incorporate the same impulse-hardened tooth technology and laser-cut blade construction as smaller models while providing cutting capacity suitable for trail clearing, firewood processing, and survival applications where chainsaw access is unavailable. The extended blade length delivers cut capacity exceeding 12 inches in diameter, with folding mechanisms allowing compact storage despite the substantial blade dimensions. Katanaboy models maintain pull-stroke cutting action consistent across Silky's product line, a characteristic of traditional Japanese saw design.
Impulse Hardened Teeth Technology
Silky employs electro-impulse hardening during manufacturing, heating only the tooth tips to extreme temperatures for a fraction of a second while leaving the blade body flexible. This selective hardening process extends tooth life approximately three times longer than non-hardened teeth, making the cutting edges harder than standard files. The teeth remain sharp through repeated use in hardwood, softwood, and bone cutting applications. Silky's non-set tooth design forms teeth within the blade width rather than projecting outward, reducing material removal and friction during pull-stroke cutting. The 4-RETSUME configuration groups four teeth in combinations that facilitate sawdust discharge while maintaining smooth cutting action.
