Spartan Blades Ares
The Spartan Blades Ares is a fighter and combat utility fixed blade designed by co-founders Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey, both retired Army Special Forces NCOs. Spartan built it with input from U.S. Special Operations units and other government agencies. It sits in the Elite Grade line that Spartan Blades makes in North Carolina.
Spartan Blades Ares Specs
The Ares has a 5.375 inch drop point on 3/16 inch stock, with a long false edge along the spine. It runs 10.5 inches overall on a 5.125 inch handle and weighs about 6.75 ounces with full tang construction. For a knife this size, that is light. It moves fast in the hand and won't drag down a belt or plate carrier.
MagnaCut Blade and SpartaCoat Finish
Spartan runs CPM MagnaCut at 61 to 63 HRC with its double deep cryo heat treatment. That sits toward the hard end of the steel's range, so it holds an edge for a long time while keeping the toughness MagnaCut is known for. Our knife steel guide covers the tradeoffs. The blade wears SpartaCoat PVD, either DLC flat black or ZrN flat dark earth, which cuts glare and adds a hard wearing layer of protection.
Canvas Micarta Handle and Sheath Options
The handle uses CE canvas Micarta in black or green. Its coarse weave holds well with wet or gloved hands. Builds on our shelf pair either blade finish with either handle, and they ship in black or coyote Kydex or a black MOLLE sheath, depending on the configuration. That covers tactical gear mounting as well as belt carry.
Ares vs Horkos and the Spartan KA-BAR
The Horkos is also an Iovito and Carey MagnaCut fixed blade, with a longer drop point of about 5.7 inches for anyone who wants more reach. If you want the classic USMC fighting knife pattern, the Spartan KA-BAR gives you a 7 inch MagnaCut blade. The Ares sits between them, the most compact of the three.
