The WE Banter is the first knife Ben Petersen ever designed, and it reads like a short list of what he learned handling thousands of knives: a blade just under three inches, a clean drop point, a deep carry clip, and a handle that sits flat in the pocket. WE Knife Company builds every version, and each one carries Ben's WIUG mark, short for the "What is up guys" intro from the more than 1,000 knife videos he made before designing knives. Ben also co-founded KNAFS, his own Utah knife company.
The Banter that started it runs a roughly 2.9 inch flat ground S35VN drop point on 0.1 inch stock, a nested liner lock, thumb studs, and caged ceramic bearings that make it fun to flick open. The clip reverses for left or right hand tip up carry. We stock it in black burlap Micarta and in Guibourtia wood, which comes in at 2.89 ounces.
Ben's first sketches of the Banter had a crossbar lock, and the Banter 2 finally delivers it, so closing the knife no longer puts your thumb in the blade's path. It keeps the 2.87 inch S35VN blade and adds aluminum scales over stainless liners, titanium hardware, and a reversible deep carry clip, at 6.66 inches open and 3.06 ounces. Choose blue or purple aluminum, or green canvas Micarta.
The Bougie Banter is the dressed up member of the family: a crossbar lock framed in 6AL4V titanium with Art Deco design cues, a titanium clip, and a 2.91 inch modified drop point in S45VN at 59 to 61 HRC. S45VN is the newer successor to S35VN, and our guide to every major knife steel breaks down the difference. It comes in gray or blue titanium, weighs 3.02 ounces, and carries right hand tip up only.
Want the classic at its lightest? Take the original liner lock. Want the easier, more ambidextrous lock? Take the Banter 2. Want titanium and a harder working steel? The Bougie Banter earns its name. For a smaller, budget friendly take on the same shape, WE's sister brand makes the CIVIVI Baby Banter, and more everyday carry options live in our folding knives.
