BergBlades is Matt Westberg, who started the company in 2013 after years of building customs. He grew up carrying a knife on the trail, treated it as a tool rather than a collectible, and once smuggled his favorite one into fourth grade, which tells you where the interest started. Westberg has worked as a firefighter since 2012 and also runs as an engineer, boat operator, and rescue swimmer instructor. Outside of that he races marathons, ultras, and cycling events. The same tolerance for grinding through a long problem shows up in the knives.
Every BergBlades model shares a vocabulary. Milled titanium frames with weight reduction pockets, smooth contoured handles with no hot spots, and a fuller cut into the blade that doubles as the opening method. Westberg builds models out of parts of other models on purpose. The Sweeney takes its frame from the Barber, its blade from the TiCK stretched to fit, and its deployment hole from the SLiM, and the name is a nod to the barber it came from. The TiCK borrowed its fuller from the Mutt. The Alpha started life as a fixed blade and got reworked into a front flipper folder that kept the Iron Wolf's ergonomics and blade shape.
The steel runs premium across the board. The TiCK is S90V, which is about as much edge retention as you can buy in a production folder and will make you work for it on the stones. The original Sweeney is CPM 20CV. The Sweeney 2.0, Mini Sweeney, and Alpha have moved to MagnaCut. Handles are 6AL-4V titanium in bead blast, dark stonewash, sandblast, PVD, and black DLC, with inlay options in FatCarbon, CamoCarbon, marbled carbon fiber, micarta, Ultem, and abalone. Ceramic bearings throughout.
Westberg designs and BergBlades' production folders are manufactured by Reate Knives in China, which BergBlades states openly on its own product pages. That is worth knowing rather than guessing at. Reate is one of the better shops working today, and it is the reason the fit and finish on these lands where it does. Westberg's handmade work is a separate thing entirely and turns up rarely.
