Herman Knives is the one-man workshop of Bartosz Herman, a full-time maker in Łódź, Poland who designs, machines, and finishes every folder himself. Each knife carries its own serial number, ships with a dedicated pouch and a custom titanium pivot tool, and represents a single pass through his bench rather than a production run, which is why batches at this level sell out nearly as fast as they land.
The lineup runs the Ishtar, Sting, Big Sting, Bee, Mantis, Slim, Vespertilio, and Ovium, with the Epika pen machined in matching titanium finishes. Construction is Grade 5 titanium throughout: frames, backspacers, clips, and lock bars, with tungsten carbide inserts on the lock face to prevent galling against the blade tang and carbide stop pins that shrug off deployment impact. Herman builds each ceramic ball bearing pivot by hand and tunes the ceramic detent for a clean, repeatable flick, which puts these among the smoothest folding knives we carry at any price. Surface work is where each piece becomes its own: deep engraved Nebula Ripple, hammered textures, fade anodizing, and Timascus or patterned inlays, all covered in our knife handle materials guide.
Blade steel rotates with the build rather than the marketing. CPM MagnaCut anchors current production at 62 HRC in 3.2 to 3.5mm stock, Böhler M390 and the higher-vanadium M398 carry much of the catalog, RWL34 appears on select Mantis builds, and Damasteel dresses the full-dress collector pieces. Finishes run from stonewash to full mirror polish. Our knife steel guide breaks down how all five compare, though with a Herman, the honest answer is that any of them will outlast the rest of the knife market's attention span.
