The ESEE 4 is the workhorse of the lineup and the knife ESEE built its reputation on with military, law enforcement, and SERE instructors. It's a half-inch longer and notably thicker than the ESEE 3, sized for heavier field tasks while staying compact enough for belt carry. DLT stocks the ESEE 4 in three configurations: the standard 1095, the CPM-S35VN stainless, and the 4HM modified handle bushcraft variant.
The ESEE 4 runs a 4.5-inch drop point blade at 0.188-inch stock thickness, 50% thicker than the ESEE 3 but half the thickness of the ESEE 5. That puts it squarely in medium-duty field knife territory. The full flat grind with a 4.1-inch cutting edge handles fire prep, food prep, game processing, and light batoning, while the thicker spine and full-tang construction take impact work the ESEE 3 would strain against. At 8 ounces without sheath and 9 inches overall, the ESEE 4 is the most versatile single knife in the line for users who need one blade to cover hard camp work and fine cutting tasks.
The standard ESEE 4 runs 1095 high-carbon at 55 to 57 HRC with a textured powder coat. It sharpens easily, holds a working edge, and takes abuse as well as any knife in the lineup. The S35VN version runs premium powder stainless at 59 to 60 HRC with a stonewashed finish and 3D contoured G10 handles. S35VN roughly doubles the edge retention of 1095 and virtually eliminates the rust concerns of the carbon steel, though it runs harder and is not intended for the same punishing abuse as the 1095 model. Pick 1095 for hard-use batoning and jungle conditions. Pick S35VN for extended edge retention and low-maintenance carry.
The 4HM is the bushcraft variant. HM stands for Handle Modified, and the changes mirror those on the 3HM: the forward finger choil is gone, the spine jimping is removed, and the Micarta handle is rounder and wider for long-use comfort. Blade steel is 1095 at the same thickness as the standard ESEE 4, with a slightly different overall geometry that puts blade length at 4.38 inches. The 4HM ships with a traditional brown leather belt sheath rather than the molded polymer sheath of the standard 4, and Kydex sheath options are also available. This is the variant for hunters, bushcrafters, and traditional outdoor users who want a classic handle feel over a tactical profile.
The standard ESEE 4 and S35VN variants share the same molded polymer sheath with removable clip plate, so Molle backs and replacement sheaths cross-fit between both. The 4HM uses the leather or Kydex sheath exclusive to that variant. Every ESEE 4 carries the brand's unconditional lifetime warranty against blade breakage, transferable to any subsequent owner with no receipt required. Made in the USA with blades heat-treated by Rowen Manufacturing.
