ESEE-5
The ESEE 5 is the hardest-use fixed blade in the ESEE lineup, designed by military SERE instructors as a downed-pilot survival knife where failure is not an option. At a quarter-inch of 1095 stock and 16 ounces of knife weight, it's built like a pry bar with an edge. Every design choice prioritizes survival and extraction over cutting finesse, which is what separates the ESEE 5 from the thinner ESEE 3 and ESEE 4 and places it in a category of its own.
Blade Geometry and SERE Design Intent
The ESEE 5 runs a 5.25-inch drop point blade at 0.25-inch stock thickness, double the ESEE 4 and four times the ESEE 3. The saber grind sacrifices some slicing efficiency to maximize edge strength and tip durability, trade-offs SERE instructors specifically wanted in a knife that might need to cut through aluminum skin, dig fighting positions, or split hardwood without a tool in sight to replace it. Overall length is 11 inches. The extra-long handle gives you leverage for batoning and prying that the smaller ESEE models can't match.
Survival Features Built Into the Frame
The ESEE 5 carries dedicated survival features you won't find on the 3 or 4. A glass-breaker pommel lets you punch through aircraft or vehicle windows without using the blade edge. A bow drill divot is machined into the Micarta handle scale for fire-starting with primitive methods. Thumb jimping on the spine gives controlled grip during fine cutting tasks. Canvas Micarta scales are removable for field cleaning and handle-wrap replacement if the scales are ever damaged. Full-tang construction runs from tip to pommel.
1095 Carbon Steel at SERE-Tested Heat Treat
The ESEE 5 runs 1095 high-carbon steel at 55 to 57 HRC, heat-treated by Rowen Manufacturing. 1095 at this hardness sharpens easily in the field on any abrasive surface and takes heavy impact without chipping, which is exactly what SERE instructors specified. Textured powder coat protects against corrosion during extended field use, with basic oil maintenance required to prevent rust around the edge and laser engraving. The ESEE 5 is not offered in S35VN because the survival mission profile demands 1095 toughness over stainless edge retention.
Kydex Sheath and Lifetime Warranty
The ESEE 5 ships with a Kydex sheath and removable clip plate sized for belt or pack carry. Molle backs and accessory pouches are available for full tactical configurations. Every ESEE 5 carries the brand's unconditional lifetime warranty against blade breakage regardless of cause, transferable to any subsequent owner with no receipt required.
