The ESEE Izula is the most popular knife in the ESEE lineup, with over 100,000 sold since its release. It's a 2.63-inch fixed blade built around the same full-tang construction, 1095 or S35VN steel options, and unconditional lifetime warranty that define every ESEE knife. The Izula family covers two models that share a blade but differ in handle configuration: the skeletonized Izula and the fuller-handled Izula-II.
The name comes from the Isula, the Peruvian bullet ant that locals consider the meanest insect in the Amazon. ESEE built the knife to match the namesake: small, tough, aggressive, and capable of punching above its weight. Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin designed the Izula specifically as a lightweight survival blade for jungle environments where full-size knives become a burden and pocket folders don't hold up to hard use. That design brief is why the Izula carries the same 1095 heat treat and full-tang construction as the ESEE-3 and ESEE-4 at a fraction of the size and weight.
The standard Izula runs a skeletonized handle with a carabiner hole at the pommel and no scales installed from the factory. It weighs 2 ounces without the sheath and carries like a neck knife or deep-pocket blade. The skeletonized handle is designed for paracord wrapping, aftermarket G10 scales, or bare use, depending on your preference. The Izula-II extends the handle by half an inch and ships with canvas Micarta scales installed, giving you a four-finger grip out of the box at 3.2 ounces. Both knives share the same 2.63-inch blade and use the same sheaths, so any sheath accessory fits either model.
The Izula ships in two steel options. The 1095 carbon steel version runs 55 to 57 HRC with a textured powder coat finish that adds corrosion protection and dampens reflectivity in the field. 1095 is easy to sharpen on any abrasive, holds a working edge through hard use, and responds well to the proprietary Rowen Manufacturing heat treat ESEE uses across the entire line. The CPM-S35VN version replaces the carbon steel with premium powder stainless in a stonewashed finish, trading some ease of sharpening for substantially better corrosion resistance and edge retention. S35VN is the right choice for wet, humid, or saltwater environments where 1095 would need constant oil maintenance.
The Izula ships with an injection-molded polymer sheath and a removable clip plate configured for pocket or waistband carry out of the box. Swap the clip plate for a Molle back for tactical carry, or reconfigure for neck carry with a paracord lanyard through the sheath eyelets. The skeletonized handle makes a strong anchor point for lanyards, carabiners, or retention cords. Replacement sheaths, G10 and Micarta scale upgrades, and paracord kits are available in the ESEE Accessories category.
The Izula is ESEE's most counterfeited knife. Chinese knockoffs circulate widely through unauthorized online channels, and these counterfeits use softer steel, skip the Rowen heat treat, and do not carry the ESEE warranty. Buy from authorized dealers only. Every authentic ESEE knife, including the Izula, carries an unconditional lifetime warranty that covers blade breakage regardless of cause. The warranty transfers with the knife to any subsequent owner and requires no receipt or proof of purchase.
