Most machetes come home from the field dirty and get hosed off outside. The ESEE Libertariat comes home and goes to the kitchen. This is the rare machete designed to cross between tropical brush work and the butcher block, and it lands legitimately in both camps. John Armstrong drew it for ESEE's Expat Knives division as a lightweight survival machete modeled on the Latin American cacao and coconut knives — tools Central and South American workers use every day to open cacao pods, process coconuts, and prep food in the field. The form follows the function. A short, cleaver-adjacent profile with a straight spine, a forgiving belly, and no piercing tip because the job never calls for one.

Blade runs 9 inches of 1095 high-carbon steel at 3mm thickness, full tang, built in the USA. At 13 ounces total, the Libertariat rides on a day hike or rucksack without the weight penalty of a full-size chopper, and the compact footprint slips into truck consoles and pack external pockets where an 18-inch Latin pattern would not fit. One detail most retailers miss: ESEE ground the spine square at a true 90 degrees, which means it strikes a ferro rod cleanly for fire starting without dulling the working edge. The blunted tip also makes it remarkably competent on a cutting board. A 9-inch 1095 blade cleavers through pork shoulder, breaks down hogs, splits roast beef, and dresses game with the kind of edge that pull-through kitchen knives cannot hold.

Natural canvas Micarta scales balance the aesthetic away from tactical and toward functional heritage tool. Canvas Micarta soaks up impact on wet wood and dries out without warping after a river crossing or a kitchen rinse. The tan canvas sheath matches the scales and rides light on a belt or inside a pack. For hikers, hunters, off-grid cooks, and anyone who wants one blade that works from the brush line to the cutting board, the Libertariat is uncommonly honest equipment.
