ESEE Knives builds the fixed blade you hand somebody who is actually going into the woods. Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin started Randall's Adventure & Training in 1997, then spent years teaching jungle survival in the Peruvian Amazon under contract with the Peruvian Air Force survival school before bringing the training home. They designed the RTAK, the Laser Strike, and five years of RAT Cutlery knives for other makers before forming ESEE, so every model in the line came out of instructors watching students use and break gear. Rowen Manufacturing builds the knives in Idaho, and the full range runs from the Candiru neck knife to the ESEE 6 camp blade.
The numbered series is one design philosophy at four sizes. The ESEE 3 is the 3.88 inch everyday field knife, light enough for a duty belt. The ESEE 4 adds blade for the pack and is where most first time buyers should start. The ESEE 5 runs quarter inch stock built to a downed pilot brief, and the ESEE 6 stretches to a 6.5 inch blade for bushcraft and big game work. The Izula, named for the Peruvian bullet ant, is the skeletonized neck knife that made the brand famous. The Junglas II, the Ashley Game Knife, and the Camp-Lore designs live with the additional ESEE models, and every one of them belongs among the survival knives people trust their kit to.
The core line runs 1095 carbon steel at around 57 Rc under Rowen's heat treatment, a hardness picked on purpose. It gives up some edge retention to the super steels to buy the toughness that survives batoning, chopping, and prying, and it comes back on whatever stone you carry. Every model is full tang, tip to pommel. Stainless and tool steel runs fill out the catalog, with S35VN on the Izula and Ashley Game Knife, CPM 3V on the Pacaya, and MagnaCut and A2 on the Sencillo. Our knife steel comparison puts all of them side by side, and the wider fixed blade knives collection shows how they stack up against other makers.
Break an ESEE knife and the company repairs or replaces it without questioning the claim. No receipt or proof of purchase is required, and the warranty is lifetime and transferable, so it follows the knife to every owner it ever has. It covers breakage, not rust, wear, loss, or cosmetic damage, and the company is blunt that these are not throwing knives. Replacement Kydex sheaths, scales, clip plates, and MOLLE hardware are stocked in ESEE accessories.
