Guardian Tactical builds double-action OTF automatic knives in the USA, and does it to tolerances most of the industry can't hold. Founded in 2012 by blade design engineer Andy Buerk and CNC machinist Brian Mercer, the company puts more than 200 hand operations into every knife and backs each one with a lifetime warranty against material and workmanship defects.
The catalog spans five platforms. The GTX-025 covers compact carry, the RECON-035 G2 holds down the classic mid-size footprint in spear point, tanto, and drop point grinds, and the RECON-040 tops the range for duty use. The APEX adds carbon fiber inlays and Crucible's new MagnaMax steel, while the Scout, refined from years of RECON owner feedback, brings a slimmer chassis, ergonomic jimping, and clip point and dagger blade options. Every one of them deploys out the front with a thumb slide, making Guardian the American benchmark in our OTF knives category and a cornerstone of the full automatic knives selection.
Guardian runs three powder metallurgy steels across the line. Elmax delivers the balanced edge retention and corrosion resistance that made it a production standard, and it still carries the GTX-025, RECON-040, and Scout. The RECON-035 G2 upgraded to CPM MagnaCut, Larrin Thomas's stainless that pairs near tool steel toughness with genuine corrosion resistance. The APEX debuts CPM MagnaMax, Crucible's follow-up to MagnaCut with a harder-wearing carbide package for longer edge life. Our knife steel guide breaks down all three chemistries side by side.
The deployment system is Guardian's signature. Ceramic bearings under the thumb slider ride on machined steel rails rather than bare aluminum, cutting friction to almost nothing and keeping the action consistent across temperature swings, with 22 contact points stabilizing the blade at lockup. Handles are Type III hard anodized 6061-T6 aluminum in black, OD green, and burnt orange, with carbon fiber inlays on select models. Pocket clips on most of the line accommodate left or right hand carry, which keeps these tactical knives ready for either hand.
