The Hinderer Modular Backspacer System, or HMBS, is Rick Hinderer's answer to swapping a backspacer without taking the knife apart. Loosen a single set screw, slide the old backspacer off, slide the new one on, and tighten back down. This page collects the HMBS conversion hardware and the backspacers that run on it.
HMBS debuted on the MP-1, which was designed around the system from the start, its name even stands for Modular Platform. Because the XM-18 is such a popular platform, Rick also built a retrofit kit that converts a standard XM-18 over to HMBS. That kit includes the new standoffs and screws needed for the conversion, since the factory standoffs and original screws are not HMBS compatible, so start with the kit before adding backspacers.
Once the system is installed, the backspacers are where the fun is. They come in different materials and finishes from anodized titanium to copper that patinas over time, and in functional versions with lanyard loops, bottle openers, and more. Backspacers are sized to the model, so match them to your knife, and remember they require the HMBS kit to be installed first. You will find the full system within the wider range of Hinderer parts and accessories.
