Hinderer HMBS Hardware
The Hinderer Modular Backspacer System, or HMBS, is Rick Hinderer's way to change a backspacer without taking the knife apart. It debuted in 2016 on the Hinderer MP-1, short for Modular Platform, and this page collects the HMBS kits that bring the system to the 3.5 inch XM-18.
How the Hinderer Modular Backspacer System Works
Instead of a backspacer fixed between the scales, an HMBS backspacer rides on dedicated standoffs and is held by a single screw, so it comes off in seconds. The MP-1, Jurassic, Full Track, and Project X were built around the system from the factory, and on the Full Track and Project X the backspacer even doubles as a disassembly tool. XM-18 3.5 HMBS Glass Breaker Kits
For the standard Hinderer XM-18 3.5, the glass breaker kit adds a striking backspacer for emergency use, turning your everyday carry into a vehicle escape tool without adding anything to your pocket. Each kit includes the glass breaker backspacer, two HMBS standoffs, one color matched standoff, handle screws, and a .050 inch Allen wrench, in bronze, blue, battle bronze, battle blue, working finish, and stonewashed titanium. It fits the standard 3.5 only, not Skinny or Fatty builds.
Installing an HMBS Kit
Installation replaces the factory standoffs with basic Allen wrenches, and reassembly uses a T6 Torx. The kit runs Eklipse handle screws, so keep that in mind if you replace the included screws later. The XM-18 3.5 HMBS parts kit is also available for spares or a second setup.
