The Hinderer XM-18 Slipjoint, nicknamed the Slippy, is the non locking member of the XM family. It shares the exact size and shape of the XM-18 3 inch but trades the frame lock for a traditional slipjoint, making it the most gentlemanly folder among Rick Hinderer knives, built in the USA.
With no frame lock, there was no place for Rick's signature Lockbar Stabilizer, so he moved the idea onto the blade as an adjustable thumb disc. A track milled into the blade lets you slide the disc forward or back to tune exactly how easily the knife opens one handed. Prefer a classic feel? Remove the disc and use the track as a traditional long pull.
The Slipjoint runs a 3 inch blade on thin 0.108 inch stock, 7.125 inches open and 4.125 inches closed at about 3.6 ounces, so it slices far better than the thicker locking XMs. It has come in spanto, sheepsfoot, and spear point in CPM 20CV, a high wear stainless built for long edge life, and our comparison of every major knife steel covers how it performs. The Vintage Series paired a parkerized O1 tool steel spear point with smooth walnut for a traditional look.
Instead of a single lock side, the Slipjoint runs dual titanium liners under G-10 scales, and it still carries slightly thinner than its locking brother. It ships with the clip set for tip down carry and swaps to tip up on the right side, or you can pull the clip entirely and fit a filler tab for a clean, smooth back that rides like a classic pocket knife.
Our Hinderer XM-18 Slipjoint hardware carries scale sets in carbon fiber and two tone G-10, plus titanium filler tabs, clip and filler tab sets, and engraved no slot clips for dressing up the back. The full range of Hinderer parts and accessories covers everything else.
