The Leatherman Wave has defined the pliers-based multi-tool since 1998, when it moved the most-used blades to the outside of the handles so they open without unfolding the whole tool. It sold by the millions almost immediately, and our Leatherman history covers how it became the brand's best seller. Today the Wave runs in two builds within the full Leatherman lineup: the premium Wave Alpha in CPM MagnaCut and the classic Wave Plus in 420HC.
Launched in 2025, the Wave Alpha is the first Wave with a reverse tanto blade, a 2.89 inch black oxide CPM MagnaCut edge opened by a thumb stud for a knife-forward feel. Machined G10 handles with topo-inspired texture hold grip wet or gloved. Its 18 tools include the largest spring-action scissors ever fitted to a pliers-based Leatherman, needlenose and regular pliers, replaceable wire and hard-wire cutters, a saw, awl, diamond-coated file, and large and small bit drivers. We carry it in Cascadia and Obsidian.
The Wave Plus is the workhorse and Leatherman's best-selling multi-tool. Two 420HC blades, a 2.9 inch plain edge and a fully serrated secondary, handle everyday cutting and sharpen easily. Its 18 tools add an electrical crimper, 8 inch ruler, medium screwdriver, spring-action scissors, saw, and both wood and metal and diamond-coated files. It comes in stainless steel and black oxide.
Pick the Wave Plus for the classic dual blade layout refined since the 2004 redesign. Pick the Wave Alpha for a single premium MagnaCut blade, G10 grip, full-size scissors, and a more modern look, plus free MagnaCut sharpening from Leatherman. Our comparison of every major knife steel shows how the two blade steels differ.
Both Waves are made in the USA and backed by Leatherman's 25-year warranty. Neither ships with a sheath, so pair yours with one from Leatherman Sheaths and Accessories.
