Leatherman has been building pliers-based multi-tools in Portland, Oregon since 1983. What started with the PST (Pocket Survival Tool) has grown into a full lineup of multi-tools, fixed blade knives, and folding knives — all manufactured in the USA. The newer models run CPM MagnaCut steel blades with G-10 and stainless steel handle construction.
Blade Steels — MagnaCut and 420HC
The flagship models use CPM MagnaCut, which combines edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance in a single steel. The Arc multi-tool was the first pliers-based tool to feature MagnaCut. The Wave Alpha followed with a reverse tanto blade and thumb stud deployment. Leatherman offers free sharpening for all MagnaCut blade owners.
Traditional models like the Wave Plus and Rebar run 420HC stainless steel. It's a simpler steel that sharpens easily and performs reliably for general multi-tool use.
Handle Construction
Handle materials split across the lineup based on the tool type. The Wave Alpha uses textured G-10 scales with a topographic pattern for grip in wet conditions. The fixed blade knives — Trac, Rustle, and Pioneer — also run machined G-10 with jimping along the spine. The Blazer and Glider folding knives use milled 416 stainless steel handles with internal coring to reduce weight without losing rigidity.
Arc and Wave Alpha Multi-Tools
The Arc is a 20-function tool built around Leatherman's FREE magnetic architecture, which allows one-handed access to all implements without needing fingernails. Every tool locks individually with liner locks and deploys smoothly. The Wave Alpha runs 16 functions including spring-action scissors, an awl with eyelet, diamond-coated file, and a bit exchanger with replaceable drivers. Both models have replaceable wire cutters and integrated crimpers.
Fixed Blades and Folding Knives
The dedicated knife line includes three fixed blades, each with a different blade grind and intended use. The Trac carries a 4.2-inch drop point with a hollow saber grind and a vegetable-tanned leather sheath. The Pioneer runs a 5-inch Japanese tanto with a flat saber grind built for chopping and batoning, paired with a hybrid Kydex and leather sheath. The Rustle has a 4-inch santoku-style blade with a full flat grind designed for camp food prep.
The Blazer and Glider are folding knives using Leatherman's Compression Wedge Lock mechanism. Both feature 12-part construction and deep-carry pocket clips.
