Leatherman Micra
The Leatherman Micra is the original keychain multi-tool and the one Leatherman built around spring-action scissors instead of pliers. In the mid-1990s a young engineer named Ben Rivera, later the company's CEO, pushed to swap the pliers on a tiny keychain model for scissors, over Tim Leatherman's own doubts. The Micra was back-ordered within weeks of launch, a story told in how Tim Leatherman invented the American multi-tool, and it still sits in the full Leatherman lineup today.
10 Tools Built Around Spring-Action Scissors
At 2.5 inches closed and 1.8 ounces, the Micra is smaller and lighter than most pocket knives. Its 10 tools center on the spring-action scissors and add a 420HC knife blade, tweezers, nail file, nail cleaner, a flat and Phillips screwdriver, medium and extra-small screwdrivers, a bottle opener, and an inch and centimeter ruler. A split ring loop clips it to a keychain, zipper pull, or bag strap.
Micra Knife Blade and Personal Care Tools
The 1.6 inch 420HC blade handles the light cutting the Micra was built for: thread, tags, and packaging. The tweezers and nail file take care of splinters and broken nails on the trail, and the extra-small screwdriver fixes eyeglasses and small electronics. None of it overlaps with a pliers-based tool, which is why so many owners carry a Micra alongside a Wave, Signal, or Skeletool.
