Pro-Tech Mordax
The Pro-Tech Mordax is a Ferrum Forge design built by Pro-Tech: a full-size button lock flipper with a 3.5 inch drop point, ball bearings, and a drop shut close. It came before the Malibu, and it is one of the knives that pulled Pro-Tech from pure automatics into manual flippers, a shift covered in our Pro-Tech brand history.
Ferrum Forge Mordax History
Ferrum Forge is San Diego brothers Elliot and Chris Williamson. The first Mordax was a 2015 shop release of 200 hand-built titanium knives. When collectors wanted more, the Williamsons took the design to Dave Wattenberg, and Pro-Tech built a production version for Massdrop with aluminum scales, a CPM 20CV blade, and a button lock. It was the first knife Pro-Tech ever made in 20CV.
Pro-Tech Mordax Specs and Steel
The Mordax runs a 3.5 inch drop point on 0.125 inch stock, 8.125 inches open and about 4.6 inches closed, at roughly 3.8 ounces. Current builds are mostly MagnaCut, and a few 20CV runs remain on our shelf. Our knife steel guide covers how MagnaCut's toughness and stain resistance stack up against 20CV's wear resistance. The clip is a deep carry, set for right hand tip up carry.
Gridlock, Nexus, and Operator Builds
Smooth aluminum handles come in black, blue, green, purple, and red. The textured builds add Gridlock milling in black or blue and Nexus milling in black. The Operator pairs a black Gridlock handle with a sterile black DLC blade and a tritium button. The Nexus dress build pairs a sapphire blue PVD blade with an abalone button. Blades also run stonewash, acid wash, and black DLC.
Mordax vs Malibu and Avalon
The Malibu is the compact option at 3.25 inches and about 3 ounces, with a reverse tanto or Wharncliffe blade. The Mordax gives you a quarter inch more blade, a classic drop point, and a fuller handle for bigger hands. If you want more still, the thumb stud Avalon runs a 4.25 inch MagnaCut blade and stays under four ounces.
