Pro-Tech Malibu
The Pro-Tech Malibu is the button lock flipper that became one of Pro-Tech's steadiest sellers. Custom maker Matthew Lerch designed it, and it debuted at SHOT Show 2020, a turn covered in our Pro-Tech brand history. The awards followed quickly. The Malibu Titanium Ultimate Custom won Investor/Collector Knife of the Year at Blade Show 2021, and the Malibu Operator was named Overall Knife of the Year in 2022.
Pro-Tech Malibu Specs and Steel
The Malibu carries a 3.25 inch blade on 0.125 inch stock, measures 7.5 inches open and 4.25 inches closed, and weighs about 3 ounces. Early runs used CPM 20CV. Most current builds run MagnaCut, which gives up a little wear resistance to 20CV but is tougher and far more stain resistant, and our knife steel guide breaks down that trade. A mini deep carry clip handles right hand tip up carry.
Button Lock Flipper Action
The detent on the Malibu is the button lock itself, tuned so the flipper breaks crisp with no separate detent ball. The blade rides ball bearings on hardened steel washers. Press the button and it drops shut, and your fingers never cross the blade path in either direction. Pro-Tech also kept the blade clean, with the maker's mark moved to the spine and the steel stamp hidden on the flipper tab.
Reverse Tanto, Wharncliffe, and Operator Builds
Pick your profile. The reverse tanto gives you a strong, angled tip, and the Wharncliffe gives you a straight edge for precise cuts. Operator versions of either profile come with a blacked out blade. Handles come smooth or in dragon scale, fish scale, and battleworn textures, in black, blue, red, green, purple, grey, FDE, Del Fuego, and crimson tiger camo. Blades run stonewash, acid wash, satin, black DLC, and smoky grey, and some builds add pearl buttons.
Malibu vs Mordax, Cambria 2, and Avalon
The Malibu is the compact working knife of the family. Ferrum Forge's Mordax puts the same style of action in a bigger drop point. The Cambria 2 brings back Pro-Tech's first flipper with a curved frame and inlay. The Avalon swaps the flipper for thumb studs on a 4.25 inch blade.
