Spartan Blades Harsey fixed blades come out of the first maker collaboration in the Spartan Blades catalog. William W. Harsey Jr. designed the Yarborough knife presented to Special Forces Qualification Course graduates. The Difensa and Dagger are built in North Carolina in MagnaCut. The Kukri and Fighter are built by KA-BAR in Olean, New York, in 1095 Cro-Van. Harsey also drew the award-winning Clandestina and the outdoor Nessmuk, which have their own pages.
The Difensa is named for the 1943 Battle for Monte la Difensa, where the combined U.S. and Canadian First Special Service Force fought in Italy. It runs a 6.25 inch flat ground spear point with a tapered top edge for tip strength, 11.625 inches overall at about 11.4 ounces. The canvas Micarta handle, in black or green, is modified from the Model II without rear jimping. Blades are MagnaCut in black or FDE, carried in black or coyote Kydex.
Harsey built the Dagger as a combat dagger shaped by his years working with Special Operations Forces. It carries a 6 inch blade on 3/16 inch stock, runs 10.75 inches overall, and weighs about 6.7 ounces, light for its reach. Current builds run MagnaCut in black or FDE on a black canvas Micarta handle. They ship in black or coyote Kydex, or in black or tan MOLLE sheaths for tactical gear.
The Kukri is a heavy outdoor chopper with an 8.75 inch blade on quarter inch 1095 Cro-Van stock, 13.875 inches overall at about 20.5 ounces. The weight sits forward, so it slices as it chops, and the narrow section near the handle handles finer work. The black blade sits on a contoured injection molded handle.
The Fighter puts the blade profile of a U.S. military combat utility knife on Harsey's contoured handle. It runs a 6.125 inch 1095 Cro-Van blade at 56 to 58 HRC with a high flat grind and deep fuller, 11.5 inches overall. The handle is textured injection molded, and the sheath has an active retention thumb lever. Our knife steel guide compares 1095 Cro-Van with MagnaCut.
