The Spartan Blades Machai is a recurve chopper designed by co-founder Curtis Iovito and built by KA-BAR in Olean, New York. It is part of the Pro Grade line made through Pineland Cutlery. It debuted at SHOT Show 2020 and is named for the Machai, the spirits of battle in Greek myth. In the Spartan Blades lineup, it is the knife built to chop.
The Machai carries a 6.625 inch flat ground reverse recurve blade on 0.187 inch stock, with full tang construction. Spartan lists it at 11.75 inches overall and about 10.7 ounces, with roughly 6 inches of cutting edge on a handle just under 5 inches long. Like a kukri, it carries most of its weight forward of the grip. That forward balance lets a mid-size fixed blade chop well above its length.
KA-BAR runs German-origin 1095 Cro-Van at 56 to 58 HRC under a black powder coat. It is a tough carbon steel that shrugs off the impact of chopping and sharpens quickly in the field. Because it is not stainless, keep the edge dry and oiled. Our knife steel guide compares it with stainless options.
The textured CE canvas Micarta handle comes in black or green and grips securely wet or dry, which matters when you are swinging a blade. The Machai ships in an injection molded sheath with an active retention thumb lever and multi-position, MOLLE-compatible mounting. With the sheath, the whole package comes in at around 15.7 ounces, light enough to ride on a pack all day.
The Damysus is the straight-edged KA-BAR built sibling, with a 5.5 inch drop point built for tip strength. For a full kukri, the 8.75 inch Harsey Kukri in our Harsey fixed blades collection goes heavier. When the job outgrows any knife, our axes and saws take over.
