The White River Apex is a compact hunting knife with a lot more backbone than its size suggests. It is a Smith & Sons design built entirely in the USA by White River Knife & Tool in Fremont, Michigan, part of a partnership that runs more than a decade, and it is made to process animals of any size along with everything else that comes up on the hunt.
The Apex runs a 2.75 inch modified clip point with a curved belly that sweeps through skinning and caping cuts, ground from .130 inch stock so it stays stout at the tip. The blade is precision ground, heat treated, cryogenically tempered, and leather honed, so it comes out of the box extremely sharp.
White River runs the Apex in CPM MagnaCut at 63 to 64 Rc, a stainless that pairs high hardness and edge retention with the toughness and corrosion resistance a field knife needs around blood and wet weather. Our comparison of every major knife steel shows why MagnaCut has become the benchmark for hunting blades.
A curved 4.25 inch handle fills the hand in a standard grip and stays comfortable choked up for precision work. We carry it in Natural Canvas Micarta with black liners, Natural Burlap Micarta, and Maple and Black Richlite. Our guide to knife handle materials covers how each performs. At 7 inches overall and 3.9 ounces, it rides in an included multi-position Kydex sheath.
The Apex is at home on a deer or elk hunt and just as useful as an everyday carry fixed blade. Like every White River, it is guaranteed for life with free sharpening. For a thinner Smith & Sons design aimed at birds and trout, see the Shoal, or compare it with the White River Hunter.
